The Women Behind the Brand: A Conversation with Mary Castilow

In the lead up to the Women of Impact Summit, we got the chance to speak to Mary Castilow, Brand President of Lane Bryant. Mary shared a pivotal moment early in her career, what inspires her today, and what impact means to her.

Can you share a pivotal moment in your career that shaped your journey as a leader?

The pivotal moment that shaped my career came early in my journey. I was working for Gap Brand as a junior merchant and had the opportunity to move to Tokyo, Japan with my husband. His career took us abroad, but given Gap's rapid store expansion plans in Asia, I was lucky to continue to have a role with the Brand locally as a new store coordinator.

Gap’s plan was to double the store count in the two years ahead, and I took on this new role with enthusiasm, working with cross-functional teams at the San Francisco headquarters, the national team, and a few expats on the ground in Japan. It was my first true experience seeing what great collaboration from all aspects of the business and all levels in the company could look like. The effort to open the stores seamlessly was a big feat! While I only played a small part, I learned from incredible leaders about the power of teamwork, influence, and what happens when you work together with a very clearly articulated goal and a well laid-out plan. To this day, I view collaboration as a competitive advantage, and I credit any win I have been part of to the team that worked together to get it done.

What inspired you to pursue the work you do today?

It's simple. Fashion and working as a team inspired me to do the work I do today. I grew up working part-time in clothing stores and waitressing my way through college. Serving customers and working as a team to do it became a passion, and fashion made it even more fun and exciting.

How do you define impact in your work and leadership?

For me, impact comes from helping guide, influence, and shape others on their leadership journey. Seeing my team members define their own leadership and make their own impact on others and business results is the most fun part of my job.

What advice would you give to someone working to find their path to impact?

If you're trying to find your path to impact, my advice is: do what you love and find what you are most passionate about. Don't settle for anything less. That energy can only lead to personal and professional growth.

Why do you believe supporting organizations like Delivering Good is important?

I grew up at Gap Brand where we constantly said we do more than sell clothes. That culture and mindset of giving back to others in need really stuck with me. Personally and professionally, “paying it forward” is a guiding principle I do my best to honor. Because when you do good, it always comes full circle and makes the world and the communities we live in a better place.

What excites you most about participating in this year's Women of Impact Summit?

What I am looking forward to most at the Women of Impact Summit is meeting the incredible women and leaders with a similar passion and hearing their stories. I know it will be an incredibly inspiring day.
