Designing a Career With Purpose: A Conversation with Maria Hedian
As we lead up to the 2026 Women of Impact Summit, we got the chance to speak to Maria Hedian, Vice President of Career & Internship Services at LIM College. Maria shared her experiences with stepping into a leadership role, what inspires her, key advice that has shaped her career, and what she is most looking forward to at this year’s Summit.
Can you share a pivotal moment in your career that shaped your journey as a leader?
One of the most pivotal shifts in my career came when I moved from working in the fashion industry to working with students preparing to enter it. After years across retail, corporate, and production, I stepped into education and saw, very clearly, the gap between what the industry expects and how students are being prepared.
That realization was shaped by the interns I had worked with - smart, capable, and driven, yet often unsure of what came next once school was no longer guiding them. I understood that feeling deeply. I had built my own career without connections or a clear roadmap, and I knew how long it could take to find your footing.
The second moment came later, during a completely different chapter of my life. While traveling and working as a digital nomad, I attended a conference in Italy where someone said, “focus on what you’re an expert in.” It was simple, but it forced a level of clarity I hadn’t allowed myself before. I went back to my hotel room and started building what would become my company.
Those two experiences - seeing the gap and deciding to step into it - shaped how I lead and the work I continue to build today.
What inspired you to pursue the work you do today?
I’ve spent over two decades in the fashion industry, and much of what I learned came through figuring things out on my own. There’s so much that isn’t taught but is expected: how to navigate spaces, how to position yourself, how to understand the difference between an opportunity and the right opportunity.
As an eldest daughter, I’ve always been someone who had to figure things out first and then make it clearer for others. That mindset naturally carried into my career. What inspired me to do this work is the desire to make the path more visible and more honest, so people can move with intention instead of guesswork.
How do you define impact in your work and leadership?
I define impact by whether someone leaves with more clarity, confidence, and access than they had before. Being in the room is just the starting point, what matters is how you navigate it and what you do with the opportunity.
As a leader, impact also means building something that lasts beyond you. I’ve built both my career and my company from the ground up, often through trial and error, while balancing a full-time leadership role with a growing platform that spans education, content, and community. It hasn’t been easy, but that experience shapes how I lead, with a focus on resilience, adaptability, and creating real opportunities for others.
What advice would you give to someone working to find their path to impact?
Pay attention to what you can’t ignore. The things that frustrate you, the gaps you keep noticing, the conversations you keep having, that’s usually where your work is.
I think people spend a lot of time trying to find the “right” path when in reality, clarity comes from movement. You don’t need to have it all figured out - you need to start, adjust, and keep going. The path reveals itself through action, not overthinking.
And most importantly, don’t wait until you feel ready. If I had done that, I wouldn’t have started anything I’ve built.
Why do you believe supporting organizations like Delivering Good is important?
Organizations like Delivering Good are doing work that is both necessary and impactful - creating access, redistributing resources, and supporting communities in tangible ways.
I was recently introduced to their work and was immediately drawn to the mission. I think in an industry like fashion, where there can be excess on one end and real need on the other, there’s a responsibility to be more intentional about how we show up. I’m proud to not only be a speaker, but to be aligned with an organization that is actively working to make a difference.
What excites you most about participating in this year’s Women of Impact Summit?
What excites me most is the opportunity to be in a space with women who are actively building, leading, and evolving - each in their own way.
There’s something powerful about being in conversations where people are honest about both the wins and the challenges, and where ideas are shared openly. I’m especially looking forward to connecting with women across different industries and experiences, and to the kind of dialogue that pushes all of us to think a little differently and lead a little more intentionally.
