Danessa Myricks: Redefining Beauty Through Purpose and Power

May 9, 2025 |
In this edition of Leading with Purpose, we are honored to feature Danessa Myricks, Founder & CEO of Danessa Myricks Beauty. A true visionary, Danessa has redefined beauty standards by creating space for self-expression, inclusion, and empowerment. Her journey—from being a single mother navigating unexpected career shifts to building a globally celebrated brand—is a testament to resilience, creativity, and leadership rooted in purpose. In this conversation, Danessa shares the pivotal moments that shaped her, the women who lifted her up, and the legacy she’s building for future generations.
Can you share a pivotal moment in your career that shaped your journey as a leader?
My career path in beauty isn’t linear—I’ve had to start, stop, and restart multiple times. In each role I’ve held, I can pinpoint a woman who helped me get to the next phase of my career. As a result, I have a deep understanding of how important women are to each other’s career ascension. Conversely, I’ve also experienced poor leadership, where I was made to feel less than, not seen, and unheard. These contrasting experiences—both positive and negative—have shaped who I am as a leader and how I want to show up in the world.
One of the most pivotal moments in my career journey was when I was let go from my publishing job. I was a single mother with two small children, and I knew I had to change the way I thought about myself and my career. I felt so exposed and scared. In that moment, I decided I wanted a career that nobody could take away from me. That’s when I fully committed to my photography and beauty career. I didn’t know what to do or how to do it at the time, but I took the first steps on the journey that would become my legacy.
What inspired you to pursue the work you do today?
I wanted to be the change I wanted to see in the world. Throughout my journey in the beauty industry, I’ve gained valuable insights from being both a consumer and a creator, as well as from my executive experience. From these perspectives, I dared to reimagine what it means to be beautiful. I wanted to create a safe space where people have the freedom and confidence to define that for themselves.
What advice would you give to the next generation of women leaders?
Be present with what’s happening today, but always lead with the future in mind. It’s our responsibility to create space not just in the present, but for future generations to come. Whether through mentorship or by creating future-forward opportunities, we should all be working to develop impactful generational change that shifts the culture toward greater equity.
I’d also say: you don’t need to have all the answers right now. Start something. Start your journey. That’s the most important thing. Set an intention for what you want to achieve, and the path will reveal itself.
